Madder or Dyer’s Mignonette is a vivacious and light green dye plant. The red pigment is extracted from the rhizomes and roots which contains alizarin and purpurin ( dyeing principles ) . Known since ancient Egyptian ( – 3000 BC ), it was cultivated by the Greeks, Romans and Gauls .
It is currently grown in the French region of Poitou-Charentes.
